Spinal Pain Myths

Spinal Pain Myths You’ve Been Told By Doctors, Friends, And Social Media – That Keep You In Pain, And Taking Pills

If you've been suffering from back pain or neck pain, then you've probably found those myths online when looking for pain relief.

Or maybe you've heard them from your doctors, friends, or family.

Either way, those myths are not true and probably keep you in pain for longer than usual.

MYTH #1 - My Back Pain Will Get Better On Its Own

While some back pain can get better if you look after it, take appropriate rest, and do some home stretches, it's rarely the case.

Even if 90% of your back pain is gone and you think that there's no need to go to a specialist, the remaining 10% of your pain will likely get worse and worse over time, leaving you no choice but to seek professional help.

It's better to get help before that happens as sometimes it may be too late and next thing you know, you're scheduled for surgery.

MYTH #2 - I've Got A Crumbling Spine

People often go to GPs and say that they have a crumbling spine, and they believe that their spine is literally going to crumble, so they won't be able to stand and will end up in a wheelchair.

I can tell you now that it's not true at all.

Our body is not that weak, your spine will not just crumble like this, our body is way stronger than you think.

A crumbling spine is just a saying people use when their spine gets the usual wear and tear, but it doesn't mean your spine will literally collapse.

MYTH #3 - I Got Arthritis So I Need To Live With It

Arthritis is a disease, it's one of the problems of wear and tear of the spine.

When you have a car, you'd expect your tires to get worn out every 2-3 years, and then you would change the tires.

You've got one spine for the rest of your life and you've never changed your disc, so it's natural to feel pain.

Joints and discs will go through wear and tear, and just like with your car, you can look after your spine too to have a good quality of life without any discomfort.

Having arthritis is just a condition, it doesn't mean you'll always be in pain. You just need to take better care of your health and that's what we're here for.

MYTH #4 - It's Never Going To Go Away

If this was true, then there would be more people out there with chronic back and neck pain than people without symptoms.

In my practice, we do find people who need to be scheduled for surgery, but that's about 5% of our patients.

We have the other 95% of people who come to us with more or less severe pain and are able to fully recover and return to their activities without pain.

Don't try to convince yourself that you will always be in pain until you've at least tried to get better and reached out for professional help.
